The Maids of Mer ************************ Everyone loves a mermaid but... the difficulty in seeing the Maids of Mer in real life is twofold. (1) They are supernatural.. and although have appeared in human size, their supernatural nature allows them to change size at will and hence making themselves unseeable as a fun game persists effectively. In this rare capture, two are seen here in miniature discussing the algal problem of offshore Brittany. The second problem (2) is that their usual home is beneath the surface of our vision (underwater) and even when spotted there by divers they adapt themselves so well to the distorting vagaries of light in water that mortals can be tricked by entrancing 'other lights' so as to swim off in the complete other direction. The Maids of Mer live in an undersea world of splendour and riches and so are rarely in need of human company. However they are known to those of Germany, France, Estonia, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, and descendants of mermaids and human men can be found today in Machaire, Ireland.
