Description

Sketched as a study in pastel chalks on A3 cartridge paper - for a larger collaborative painting to be created with Jim . ~ The drought in this part of the world has been harsh. Paddocks so bare that the livestock have to be fed hay, which is expensive because it's scarce. The vines' grapes are reduced, yet, those that survive to harvest produce intensely flavoured wines. 2006 should be a great year for Hunter Valley wines. ~ Another homage to Brett Whiteley's evocative landscapes, I'm still trying to minimalise and abstract my style. My large, and rather bright painting, Summer's Native Harvest wasn't one of my favourites, so I painted over it. I started a new work on it and learnt a couple of valuable lessons. Always use waterproof ink when attempting such a project, and don't let unspayed tomcats (who shall remain nameless) around such fragile works so they can spray on them. Jim and I painted over the mess last night and plan to start painting another version of Mixed Blessings. I so look forward to experiencing what we can create together :) ~ Thank you everyone for your emails of support and I promise to get back soon...I know you all understand that when the creative bug bites (especially during such troubled times) you just have to grab the moment. I truly appreciate your support and friendship *group hugs*. ~ Thank you for viewing and your feedback is always most appreciated :)

I'm actually quite sorry to hear that you've overpainted that colourful picture of yours, Cassie... :-( And I'm really sorry to hear about the tomcats too! But I'm sooooo happy to see this painting with so much light, so much light that it almost hurts the yes - and that's how the light there must be, dry and strong but yet warm, sometimes even too hot. These colours are wonderful! I love this piece of art, I love it how it is now but I'm of course curious to see what you're going to do together with Jim. Thanks for this delight, and lots of big hugs to both of you :-)

Thank you so much Titta hugs back from both of us. It has been an incredibly hot summer here, the festive season was the worst, 47C in the shade, well over fifty in the sun. The sun is so bright here that its almost impossible to see without sunglasses and they are as important as wearing sunscreen.

This has a wonderful sense of space & scale Cass, the feeling for the immensity & power of nature is really striking! The colours have a richness that belies the impression of drought to my eyes but the minimalist style & abstraction balance that so it works as a whole & gives me an insight into a very different world to the wet one I'm so used to! ; )

I'm so glad you're finding a way of working that's giving you a greater personal satisfaction sweetie. And no way is it copyist as every true artist cannot help but imbue their own unique essence into their work; Whiteley was Whiteley and you are you and while you and I are studying his style, our personal stamps will remain intact. I do think (again) that you've been very successful indeed in capturing that amorphous atmospheric essence that encapsulates his work, and this piece is all the deeper for it. It's an education watching you work and I hope that when it comes to painting a single canvas together, my sections will do yours justice crosses fingers. I hope one day to understand colour mixing as much as you do ;-) Anyway, thanks for sharing this preliminary study, it's a brilliant piece in its own right big hugs :-D

I saw this an immediately thought 'deserts'. Sounds like what you need more of over there are copious amounts of ice cold desserts! :P hugs I love the sweeping feel of this that to my eye, starts on the right and sweeps left and up rather than the other way around, and looking at some of Whitely's works, you are definitely capturing his style. If I know you though, you're still unsatisfied and keep wanting to tinker. I hope you find the thing you're looking for, it's elusive, even when we find it we don't know! And watch out for cats!

We may have to get used to arid landscapes and find the beauty in them. Great start...
