Description

Chalk pastel on cartridge paper, created plein air this afternoon. ~ Brett Whiteley (1939 - 1992) was one of Australia's foremost expressionist artists (for need to classify, he really was a true individual) and Jim's extended visit wouldn't be complete without trying to study Whiteley's phenomenal work. As luck would have it, Matt borrowed 'Brett Whiteley Art & Life' from the local library for us yesterday. Once we'd managed to clean up our drool, we decided to venture out (as we have most days this week) and create something in the spirit of Whiteley's vision. We drove around until we found a spot that felt would fit our inspiration, and my want to follow the golden mean (I usually use the golden spiral in nearly all my compositions, but to break that back to its roots was a challenge). Detail is also a bugbear for me, I can't help but be engrossed in the tiniest details, and that can make for some rather anal work (that's how I feel at the moment anyhow, especially after living with Jim, the master of subliminal and free creation). Minimalisation, including a large amount of negative space was my ultimate goal. The colours aren't exactly as they are in the original, and I hope the rework will glow more from undertones. Jim and I plan to study Whiteley for as long as it takes to see anywhere near what he did... let's just hope we can find a visa extension in the works as I think that will take a very long time, neither of us want to touch what Whiteley named, in one of his more famous works, "The other thing"! *shudders* ~ Thank you as always for viewing and your feedback is always most appreciated :)

Stupendous. You've managed to capture a very Whitely-esquian emotion. The use of negative space is exceptional. As Mondwin said, it's a very refined piece. Great work, and looking forward to seeing the version without pants. no_{8()s.

I get a lovely smooth feeling from this, from the beautiful sweep of the hillside against the road. I don't know my Whiteley very well, but I do know I like this, so good luck in your ventures to strike the right feeling for it! I love those warm red and brown hues too... so Aussie like.

I don't know what it is with this place, where you can upload a piece of true art in natural media and get all but ignored! A whole day later, still only a few comments (including this one) and three of those are Matt, Ava and me L. Not that we count any less, I know, but jeez, if this was a Poser chick with her 44DD tits out there'd be people giving you feedback in droves shakes head. Anyway... I really think you managed to capture some of BW's essence here, and especially for a first attempt I find it very successful indeed. To some it may look unfinished perhaps, but that would be missing the point by miles L. It was a great pleasure to watch you create this and I look forward to returning to the same spot for a whole series of works ;-) Thanks so much for creating and sharing this big hugs xxx

Looking at the photo at the link I can see what an inspiring place this must be to sketch, I really like your idea to see what you can gain from seeing & understanding the art of Whiteley, I can see the influence here & am quite fascinated to see how this develops as a series & adds to your own unique style ; )

It's that white fringed lip in the centre that draws the eye. My dad is keen of making Aussie landscape watercolours with limited detail, so I'm sure he would appreciate this too. As for Brett Whiteley's work, it's new to me. Keen to see more...

Beautiful and emotional painting! with so much subtle energy in it. I love the colours - they bring the summer into my mind, the warming sun, the fresh summer breeze, and then heat again. I so miss warmth and summer - thank you, Cassie for bringing it to me with this wonderful painting. And thanks for al the information and links too! :-)
