Description

Shot Monday, Feb 27, 2006. The goal was to recreate World War 2 era (1940s) pin-ups and Military Aircraft nose-art of the time as best as possible with limited resources. The shoot was sot with a High Key backlight and purposly trying to make the models look more washed out for an artistic painted mimic. Turned out very well! Model is Elizabeth Ashley. Great great model, she's one of the best I've ever worked with. Fantastic ideas and a pleasure to photograph! I figure I should probably talk a little bit about this one. I know some people will be mixed about the American Flag in this shot. First off, there were several pin-ups using a flag in this manner. So I wanted to be correct with those ones. Now, US Flag Code does say that you should not use the flag as clothing or drapery around a person. I spent about 2 hours one day research the flag code to see if I would really be disrespecting it because I'm a highly patriotic person. Anyway, I found out some interesting things. Any clothing, and we've all seen it, with a american flag, even the flag inside the lettering or a word, is against the code. The US Post Office violates it by doing American Flag stamps. Now, the flag code is obviously a respectable way of handing the flag and is really about opinion since it is not enforced. I personally believe that, especially since this is historically accurate, I've presented the flag in a patriotic and historical way that doesn't demean the value of the flag. Taken with a Canon Rebel EOS 5D (12mp) and Canon 28-105mm USM lens. Shot at a studio where I work in Anaheim, CA.

I am looking forward to the other (excellent) work in this series. I also have an interest in the memorobilia of the war time(s). Very tastefully done and interesting info on the flag code!

The model is beautiful, your photo is terrific; you've definitely got a very interesting "painterly effect" there! I also appreciate your thorough info on the use of the flag.. but I don't think it's a good idea to use it in this manner. I'm not saying your photo is "tasteless," but the Code ought to be followed.

Excellent, nostalgic flavor to this... she could be a Varga girl with that hair and teasing smile of hers. This image would indeed look right at home on the nose of a B-24 or B-17. Just swell!

The dogtags don't seem to match. Two boyfriends? Nah: She must have had brothers or other family members getting shot at, too! :D
