Description
The elevator opened silently and Nath strode out to meet the old man of the Church of the Holy Child. He and Tela bowed deeply as Brother Nath said, "Hail and good health, to you, Holy Celestial Father! May God smile his blessings on you this day!"
Celestial Father Toshi Balak, temporal leader of the Chuch of the Holy Child, was not in a good mood this day. He stroked his long grey beard and frowned at the red Brother and trollop friend. He knew their kind all too well. He sighed and glanced over at his guardian, AXL-101. AXL nodded stood expectantly.
The Celestial Father waved a hand, and sighed, "Enough, Good Brother. What news from the Swords of the Lord? This business with the Atmospheric Purifier on the surface world has strained all wits to the end of patience!"
Nath straightened himself as Tela drew back to the shadows, bristling inside from the abrupt dismissal. Nath cleared his throat and said clearly, "The Swords bristle at City 64's attack on the Purifier, and the hastening of the world's death. They would have struck this city...IF your emminece was not on board this city."
The Celestial Father nodded. "That is Why I remain for the nonce! I want no more blood-shed over this unfortunate incident. If only we knew why madness affected the comander of that mission to the surface or why he was going there.
Nath shrugged, "We might never know with all dead involved."
"Not all dead." Tela's quiet remark was like an icy razor slicing into the flesh of the silence. She could feel the Celestial Father's stare on her as she said quietly, "Prince Salva ordered Controller Nine, Ivor, down to the surface to procure a false Majulla woman of rainbow-hue from the very doorstep of Aldus Panchetta's lost laboratory."
"That is a slanderous and dire thing to say about your Prince, woman." The Celestial Father was cold and stern.
Tela drew a shaky breath as she said, "ONLY if I was lying. The truth is never slanderous!"
Brother Nath was startled as the Celestial Father pivoted on him in rage. "ANOTHER false Madjulla? Did you not assure me last year that you had cleared out the last nest of their kind? Is that not right?"
AXL interjected, "Brother Nath reported that he had elimated all replicants and the replicants' creator, thirteen months and four days ago. Logic suggests he could only eliminate the replicants that were present during the raid. If any were not present, they would be still alive."
Brother Nath said, "That's why I came over. We spotted one of the false Madjulla's on a motor-cycle in Firetown an hour ago. It is probably the same one. We could launch a raid into Firetow..."
The Celestial Father exclaimed, "NO! No more, at least for right now! Everyone is stirred up! We must bide our time! We must act with quiet deliberation to remove these thorns in our side. Indeed all the calamity down there is due to the evil influences of the false prophet of the false Madjulla. We might turn these awful affairs to our benefit. Spread that story amongst your contacts on the surface world. Perhaps the faithful of Trashtown can be persuaded to turn in their false prophet to us!"
Brother Nath bowed and said, "It will be made so, Your Holiness!"
Brother Nath turned and angrily collected Tela and exited into an elevator. After a moment, they both exploded into laughter.
Tela in a mock hushed voice said, " 'Only if I lie!' " She giggled and asked Nath, "Well played?"
Nath smiled and nodded, "As well played as a puppet show for children! We'll be Emporer and Empress by this time next year if things keep going this well!"
Tela loved plotting with her man.
