Description

This farm is located directly across the road from Home, Sweet Ruin and Little Old Cabin, all of which are on land owned by a friend who has served Halifax County as both a Sheriff and a Judge. The building on the left was build in the 1790's and served initially as a house. Once the other (newer) structures were built, it was converted over for use as a barn. All of these buildings are scheduled to be either moved, or demolished over the next 18 months. This image was captured on December 21, 2005 at around 11am, using an Olympus Camedia C-700UZ digital camera. The location: 4 miles east of Enfield, in Halifax County, North Carolina. Thanks for looking, I hope you'll enjoy this series over the next couple of weeks. Have a fantabulously wondermous day!

I want to make a remark on the architectural form used here. One of the things I noticed on the Dutch coastline (the Netherlands) was the remarkable shape of the roof of most of the houses there. I had never seen this before, but the roofs had the same shape as the house on the left of this picture. Someone told me that this was a typical coastline architecture and that it had something to do with the harsh wind coming in from the sea. Could it be that this house is a direct descendant from those typical coast houses in northern Europe? You already had another house in your collection with this architecture (Abandoned near Hollister) and someone (jcv) commented about the European resemblance. Just wondering...

What jvc and girsempa are saying about the similarities between European architectural influences and early American makes perfect sense all right considering the people that "founded"---or you could say "borrowed" this land they called The New World came from Northern Europe with Old World designs. Glad to see the series continue....
