Description

The Post Bridge Dartmoor Clapper bridges are unique to the rivers of Dartmoor and Exmoor and this is one of the most perfect existing specimens of the old clapper bridges. Here we have four piers supporting four great slabs, one at each end and two side by side in the centre. The single slabs are about 15 feet by 7 feet, and the bridge, which stands some 7 feet above the river, is 42 feet 8 inches long. It is weird and picturesque, and seems the proper accompaniment to the sparkling river that glitters below in its granite bed, but the full effect is somewhat marred by the proximity of the more prosaic modern road bridge and telegraph poles. It has withstood the ravages of the River Dart for centuries I was disappointed to discover some ancient stones nearby had been destroyed by vandals.

I have never seen a clapper bridge...this is remarkable to me. :-) I can almost imagine a man on a horse galloping across it ...dashing on his way to someplace. I love the history and your wonderful POV showing both bridges. Fantastic photo!! V
