Description

AC Cobra 427 Mk III was an aluminum body over- powered roadster, built since 1965 by British AC Cars Group with mighty Ford 90o V8 engine that provide 425 hp at 6000 rpm. It granted enough power for AC legendary acceleration (0-100 mph in just 8.8 seconds) and top speed of 165 mph. Just 348 Cobras 427 were built; however, Cobra was one of the most cloned cars in history to the extent that the originals are in a definite minority

Once again Alain Bouchet mesh & my materials & render :-)

Rendered with Vue 5 Infinite

Some people say that it is hard to get such results from Vue - Not at all ! all you need is to use incident angle node for varnish material and HDRI map for the sky - that's the end of the "magic"

Here is a short tutorial :

Incident Angle Input node is needed to simulate Fresnel reflections.

You link this IAI node with reflection output parameter via a filter that has a shape of a parabole decreasing from point (0,1) to (1,-0.8)

You set a high value for reflection - ex. 70%

That's all!

Obviously some tuning of highlights & bumps may increase realism but the most important are reflections.

Then you need to set up HDRI map for the sky : select environment mapping, on effercs tab set a HDRI map, you may try to increase contrast for separate reflection map

Then on Light tab select global radiosity, increase light intensity to about +0.3, light balance to 15% (those are not some magic values, you can get great result with other settings, just for my renders I used values like this)

So paint your car and hit the road ! :-)

And in case you have some troubles with setting the paint materials , you can always download the ready to use painted car here.

It uses also some other interesting automotive materials.

Thanks guys ! I studied deeper the wikipedia article about light refraction, and I found that filter shape may be improved: from x=0 to 0.5 it should be almost flat with y=-0.8, and from x=0.5 it should increase to y=1. Such setting will produce less reflections, varnish will look more realistic - however actual brighter reflections may look more spectacular :-) It's funny to play God and change laws of physics in our virtual worlds with a couple of mouse clicks :-)

Superb render of an outstanding car. A friend of mine built a kit version which ONLY has the 5.7 litre engine!!! Thanks also for the tips on how to do it!! :-)
