Description

Submitted for your perusal is a image I wipped up as this shot was stuck in my brain and would not let anything else by until rendered. THe Model is a tweaked version of Sean's famous and excellent Firefly. He is creating a tutorial on how to model one on LWG3D.org. If only I had the time for such an intensive modeling project I'd be righ in there with the rest of the gang whipping up a movie version of the ship. The thrusters and the hull heating effects are HV particles. Camera movement added to give the effect of motion blurring away and down. Enjoy.

A quick note on the The HV hull heating effect. It agonized over how to do this especially without resorting to post work. Ultimately I took the model into modeler and selected all of the points in the mesh that comprised the bottom of the ship. I copied these points into a different layer and spent quite some time deleteing unnecessary ones and jittering scaling and moving them around. The end result was a point cloud that hugged the shape and curvature of the mesh. I moved the cloud a hair below the model mesh and in layout I parented the point cloud to the hull. This way it moves with the ship. The rest was a cake walk just adjusting the HV's to look more realistic. Note to everyone struggling with HV shading. For flames like these use the sprite mode. Not only does it render faster it actually ends up looking better. THX Eromanic :)

rather sucky when you post a screen grab from the movie and call it your own. You may have some fooled but not me. Your other stuff is great so I don't get it. Why stoop to posting screen grabs?

Hee, hee. You think it is a screen grab! I love it. I guess I achieved my intention. No it is not a screen grab. Not in one episode nor scene in the movie will you find this shot. There is one close to it, in the film but if you take a look at the planet it is quite a different color. Plus at 1024 X 768 a screen grab would show more artifacts in the frame. Thanks for the crtitcism that is actually a compliment.
