Description


Dornier Do335 Pfeil (arrow) One of the fastest piston engine aircraft at 474 MPH Its lateral engines reduced drag. It is the only remaining example of its type at the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy annex. It had several roles. Its primary function was recon. the pics are a bit grany because I shot these with my old Olympus D-510 2.1 megpix with a micro flash I keep in my car

Excellent pic. My dad took a photo of one of these in 1945 on a Bavarian airbase. Glad there is still one around in DC.

Contra rotating props and centerline thrust. No assymetrical pull when on one engine and tricycle gear make it easier to fly and land. Nice piece of engineering for circa 1944/45.

i love this plane i must of shot it about twenty times. the museium is very dark and you did a good job lighting it up. i just went in nov. it a shame that the simthsonian will not let you use a tripod. it like a candy store for plane guys. good job

The rear spinner isn't original, should be a bit longer and slightly less pointy. It had an internal bomb bay (it was a high speed bomber). The rear prop was 3 inches smaller in diameter to keep its blades tip speeds reasonable in the higher speed airflow of the forward prop. Single engine speeds were about 300mph (maybe 305) on the front engine and 350mph on the rear. It had one of the first ejection seats (pneumatic) and the top fin and prop could be jettisoned prior to ejection, the lower fin for wheels up landing. Sadly, the quality of the restoration (by Dornier) kinda blows, much of the structure wasn't broken down but merely spray painted as was (wire bundles, plumbing, etc) and all natural metal areas were sprayed chrome silver (ugh). The Smithsonian guys corrected the erroneous black propellers and spinners at least.
