Description

Sonnet on Chillon Eternal Spirit of the chainless Mind! Brightest in dungeons, Liberty! thou art, For there in thy habitation is the heart - The heart which love of thee alone can bind; And when thy sons to fetters are consign'd - To fetters, and the damp vault's dayless gloom, Their country conquers with their martyrdom, And Freedom's fame finds wings on every wind. Chillon! thy prison is a holy place, And thy sad floor an altar - for t'was trod, Until his very steps have left a trace Worn, as if thy cold pavement were a sod, By Bonnivard! May none those marks efface! For they appeal from tyrrany to God. - George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (1788-1824) ;-)) Now you can see why I always had a perticular loathing for Byron's poetry. ;-)) Welcome to a new RR member Victor (VicTheSwede). Photography might be not only adictive, but also contagious. ;-))

Thank you Bruggmann for helping me start yet another addiction ;)(I almost haven't smoked since X-mas though) and thanks for posting such wonderful photos. I never got around to see Ch.de Chillon during my days in CH, it's close to where you live, right?

Could this have been any better? Pictures of old castles are what fantasy is made of and dreams of days gone by help us to cope with the trials of today. Wonderful-wonderful. Thank you.

Teachers should be banned from reciting poems like these to impressionable children. Words are powerful beings and can stay in your mind for ever. LOL. You could seriously get dungeon phobia from this kind of stuff. Very atmospheric photo. You should visit Carcassonne if you like this kind of buildng and stories.. You probably lived there in a previous life. I did. So did my husband.
