Hopalong
The one room school house was, in many ways, vastly superior to contemporary public and industrial models. Among other things, children of all ages and levels interacted, and helped one another to do their lessons. Depending on the teacher, the pace was adaptable to individual children, and since the class size was usually very small, there was much individual attention, both from the teacher and from other students. Texts were often very sophisticated, compared to their modern equivalents, especially at the early level, and basics were taught well, because it was what the parents required, and might be all many children would get in the way of formal schooling. It may surprise many Americans, where the public school system is corrupt to the point of being "diseducation", that there are still one--room school houses in parts of Africa where the same basics are taught better than in the modern American grade system.

I sooo agree with what Hopalong stated. My girlfriend is a school teacher and you just wouldn't believe some of the stories she's shared with me. Each year, they get more and more children who are damaged by the Meth drugs that are swarming our country. Teachers no longer have any control over the students and THE STUDENTS KNOW IT !! There are so many new teachers who after teaching only 1 - 2 years, quit and go onto some thing else. They just can't believe how things have turned out. It's really bad and I'm not sure the public fully understands how bad it's gotten. Anyway... I also love your photo just the way it is. It's a great reminder of how things used to be.

This is a wonderful image I think the light is just fine gives it an old master feel.. We can easily get too worried about technical aspects rather than look at the mood it creates!!

I imagine the stove made things of comfort! It is a fabulous scene!

Well done Jock. In many ways the modern art class is the 'one room schoolhouse' model - I'm teaching art faculty how to use rhino in their foundations design courses - and made the statement that because their skill levels with computers and CAD was all over the place they had to help each other ~ like in the one room school and surprisingly they all said that's how they teach their regular art classes! As Hopalong says it's too bad that model for the rest of the system is gone.

Hi Jock, man you post them faster than I can comment (kidding here friend,I know you can take it) Man does this one bring back memories. I started grade one in a small little red school house (true fact) now I don't mean the 30's but the 50's in a very small town we were living in at the time. I was the best student in the class but as years went by I became the worst, aint't that something something. Fantastic my man ! George.

My mom spent most of her early school years in a school like this, where all the grades were in one room. People are right, classrooms are largely out of control these days and meaningful education very difficult to achieve. If you ever saw a math or english test from about 100 years ago it would shock you with it's complexity and difficulty. Terrific shot, I think you did a great job with the lighting.

I actually started school in one of these little schools! In Minnesota, way up north near Deluth, small schools were very popular 28 years ago, and still were used in certain areas. If I can remember right, there was only maybe 20 kids tops in this class, and we ranged from kindergarten(the grade I was there) to a couple kids in high school classes. I truly wish schools were this way still. Maybe our kids would learn the way they are supposed to and WANT to stay in school to finish.
