Description

This one I dedicate to Oskar a.k.a. iaacf since you have posted so many pictures of Dutch landscapes. Paying a visit to your gallery I was stunned to see all (513) your postings (and I know most of them I've seen but looking in perspective it's great to see all those European shots) with so much variety, all pictures with high quality. And especially Dutch Sahara and Dutch Sahara 2 posted half a year ago show well the nature of these sand-drifts. Before I will start the new series, a visit to one of our islands, I start with this upbeat, little islands of sand in a sea of sand. It is a small formation in the Mosselsche Zand, a sand-drift in the Netherlands. The grass, not more than 5 cm (2 inch) high, keeps the sand together and will colonize this sandy area in sods. Only on large areas the influence of the wind can (almost) prevent this from happening, but else it depends on human intervention. Sand-drifts have come into existence by cutting down the forests in the 17th to the 19th century. Forest administration nowadays no long allows to chop down entire forests, but the sand-drifts that were the result of these earlier cuts provide an unique biotope of very poor soil, and most of them are free accessible. Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 70 mm and cropped) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

sand dunes are always interesting to me especially if I do not have to cross on foot.during a Nevada summer!!funny how the grass can get a stronghold in the sand

Nature always finds a way. If anything can grow, it will. I really like the perspective here; nice photo. Thanks for the links to Oskar's gallery. I hadn't looked at it before.
