Description

Originating from the U.S., the Red-eared Terrapin has been introduced into many waterbodies and now feature in many lakes and ponds throughout the world. In Southeast Asia, particularly in temple ponds, public parks and reservoirs. Such releases are either bored pet owners who want to rid themselves of their terrapins when they get too large for their tanks, or are Buddhists making 'merit'. However they are master escape artists we had one we called Houdini, and my kids were heartbroken when she escaped for the last time, often seen in our local lake a mile away!! The shells of juveniles are bright green, and this darkens with age. The face shows a distinctive arrangement of pale yellow stripes, and red markings behind the ear. During the day groups of these terrapins can be seen sunning themselves on rocks or fallen logs. The species is well established around urban areas, and is likely to spread to other habitats in future; there is a danger that these will displace the resident breeds.. Thanks for taking time to look and any comments

Well in my part of Texas, this is a native species lol. In fact, I spent time today building a floating turtle raft for my pond and watching the courtship antics of a small male and a large female. This is something I have seen many times. He swims after her constantly untill she stops, then he manuvers himself in front of her (face to face)with his head and front legs extended as far forward as possible. If she remains still for a moment or so, he then begins to make rapid flicking movements with the back sides of his front feet to both sides of her face till she tires of it and moves on. Undeterred he repeats this endlessly for days, lol. It is very amusing because he is so persistant and because when she stops swimming he is often struggling so hard to keep up, he runs into her butt before he realizes she has stopped. A very pretty picture of a very pretty turtle.

How beautiful!! Every turtle has thirteen spots on his or her back. The Native Americans use this as the moons. "Thirteen Moons on Turtle's Back"
