Description

Originating from the U.S., the Red-eared Terrapin has been introduced into many waterbodies and now feature in many lakes and ponds throughout the world. In Southeast Asia, particularly in temple ponds, public parks and reservoirs. Such releases are either bored pet owners who want to rid themselves of their terrapins when they get too large for their tanks, or are Buddhists making 'merit'. However they are master escape artists we had one we called Houdini, and my kids were heartbroken when she escaped for the last time, often seen in our local lake a mile away!! The shells of juveniles are bright green, and this darkens with age. The face shows a distinctive arrangement of pale yellow stripes, and red markings behind the ear. During the day groups of these terrapins can be seen sunning themselves on rocks or fallen logs. The species is well established around urban areas, and is likely to spread to other habitats in future; there is a danger that these will displace the resident breeds.. Thanks for taking time to look and any comments

I had these when I was a kid. We bought them from a local pet store. You are right - they can get out of just about anything! Excellent shot, Dan.

Great shot of this beautiful creature, It is a pity they are so popular in the pet trade, but then again I did have two of them. Boy do they grow fast, we were always buying new tanks.
