Description

Acrylics on 60x90cm canvas I posted a work-in-progress of this a few days back, originally intending to develop it pretty much beyond recognition, but then deciding to just add some touches of colour. I chose orange as it's the complimentary colour of cobalt blue. This was more for an optical effect than for its own sake: when the eye views two complimentary colours of equal tonal value, the retina is confused and the colours appear to "flash", an effect Bridget Riley exploited to (literally) dazzling effect with her Op Art four decades back. Special thanks to Cassie for much-valued advice! Thank you for taking a look and your thoughts are always much appreciated :-)

Well Jim, it doesn't "flash" on my screen, but it certainly creates a very nice definition. I don't need "flash" anyway. ;) Love this, and cobalt blue is one of my favorite colors. Excellent brush work. Excellent abstract!

Well, I found it bloody hard to photograph with my Nikon digicam :-) The cobalt blue came out much lighter and the orange came out darker than it is in life, so I had to do some tweaking in Photoshop to get something closer to the real thing. This was with debatable success, but it was an improvement anyhow ;-)

Jim i LOVE this, the colours i am sure are even more impressive in real life. What i love most is the movement of the brushstrokes in the background. my imagination picks up objects floating into view and then just as quickly the change into something else, it's very beautiful!

Admire your restraint here, Jim. Just enough to bring out the white form. Like the title too, and I find myself looking for certain "clues" relating to sound in the picture which may not be there...? Bet it looks even more impressive "in person"!

With nerves of steel synapse has attempted to do the impossible to improve on perfection no less! But has he achieved this incredible feat? Yes, - oh yes, in my humble opinion those ever so tiny changes, that hint of piquancy, has indeed improved on perfection! So glad the original plan was aborted. Im very impressed with this work!!!

@Dendrite, so glad you like it, I didn't think I'd changed it enough to spoil it for you ;-) ... @Naichan, funnily enough the analogy to sound was Cassie's - the "visual echoes" towards the left reminded her of aural echoes, also the curves are reminiscent of sound waves. The orange spots are rhythmic punctuations. Although I'm not actually a synesthete, when I make music I very much visualize it in terms of colour, texture and shape, so it makes sense to me. Strangely enough though, I rarely (if ever) think of blue when I hear sound...

I don't think you have to be a synesthete to feel, taste or hear what you have expressed, and that's what makes this so beautiful to me :) Thank you sooooo much for listening as what you have achieved here is nothing short of brilliant! Thank you also for sharing all that you do my beautiful friend hugest hugs xxx
