Description

This is a Robber Fly (Asilidae) close-up. It's about 1/4 inch in size. This is the 4th species I've encountered in my area and the first time I've photographed this particular species. Robber flies are predators and insectivores. They roost like this, waiting for prey to fly-by, which they then launch to grab in mid-air. They then use their pronounced and strong probiscus to pierce their prey, inject toxins which then break down the internal organs of their prey so that they can then suck up the insides. Mmmm! ;)

Wow, very impressive macro capture, so detailed! In a split second it might fly away but you captured it well!

Good thing your camera lens looked too large for it to bite. Excellent shot!
