conduction n.
The transmission or conveying of something through a medium or passage, especially the transmission of electric charge or heat through a conducting medium without perceptible motion of the medium itself.
60cm x 90cm canvas (excluding overhanging corner at bottom right)
materials: bedsheet, pieces of bark, leaves, sticks, twigs and other pieces of wood, sand, snail shells, beetles, human hairs, twine
mediums (in order of use): wood glue, strong glue, impasto gel, fine filler, acrylics
I began this piece six months ago, working on it through November and December before putting it on ice, sporadically returning to it earlier this year. No way have I spent even remotely as much time on a single work as I have on this one, although I have no idea exactly how long - I haven't been counting the hours! I posted an early work-in-progress here which showed an undercoat of white, but it was last month before I plucked up the courage to add colour. It's been a real learning curve as my experience with colour in natural media was very limited - everything's made so easy when working in digital art that it's relatively easy to come up with effective use of colour, but working in paint is a different story! Grateful thanks to Cassie for her advice and criticism along the way - particularly with colour ;-)
I would love some constructive criticism from outside though, if anyone can oblige :-) It isn't quite finished yet - I intend to make some additional tweaks of colour, but what you see here is pretty much the end result. I'd just love to hear any suggestions before going any further!

amazing ...you're in the middle of a series with this image, it looks like its grown/developed organically, let us see the elimentals that were brought to the image and the later images should be the piece from all as a base elevation, or, take four digital photos of the piece and juxapose in different directions(just an idea) get back to me R

I can't offer any "constructive criticism"...but all I can say is I like this very much...^_^... It's not a medium I use myself but I think this is an Excellent bit of artwork....stunning!!

I'm rather lost for superlatives too Jim! Your work with the colour is absolutely stunning, I love the range of colour & tone, the richness, depth & more subtle touches all coming together perfectly imo. Personally I couldn't suggest a thing, just love it as it is!

What an organic,cosmic experience is birth, is creation. Placing elements into a suffocating embrace. Forcing cohesion. The native americans believe that all life is formed within a blue black Void, and when they are created they take on the hues of life, gold and red flushes, colours of flesh and blood, mimicking the blinding moment of ones first tragic breath. When the film between inanimate and animate is broken, stabbed thru. The fuse is lit, with an undetermined length which results in..another painful beginning.

Crikey! Colour has totally transformed this. Quite a grotesque, organic and unique work, no longer an "iceberg" as I called it before. I like the way that the hollows tend to be a deeper shade, while the ridges are lighter. It's a sort of organic colouration, so it works very well here. Constructive criticism? I wouldn't like you to do much more to this. It's great as it is. One thing you might try sometime though is using acrylic varnish to imitate wetness, thus making it more gross! Maybe not on this on though. This is an arid landscape haunted by nature's ghosts...

I've got some of that stuff, yeah, it can work well, but wouldn't use it on this piece. Maybe a future work?

As I look at this on my particular monitor, I see beauty. The colors are spectacular. But, I wish I could see this in person. Did you actually make your own organic paint? Organic colors differ so much from digital, as does the effect of lighting, daylight vs. artificial. I can't critique the organic form, but I hope this work is something that can go on exhibit, as it deserves that from what I view on my monitor. Wonderful work of art Jim. Bravo! Your work with natural media takes me back to that special, creative time in the 60's. I love it.

Ah, I see what you're getting at, everything looks naturally organic except those fringes at the ends... but doesn't bother me particularly, it could be interpreted in various ways I guess.

Wouldn't dare criticise or offer advice. It's far too good and individual for that. Instead a few thoughts on what I see: a strong base with the dark blue colouring and those rounded "objects" emphasising one side, a central spire, its shape repeated by the shadow. Then those curves, angles, taking the eye to the top right with here the colours quiet. There is rich texture everywhere amidst a conspicuous third dimension. I quite like the bottom right where the canvas plays truant to repeat the upper curve and so functions to unify.
