Description

Bright weather is nice but increasing contrasts that can cause dark parts to become entirely black. Although the original slide shows still some details the ceilings of the gateways are entirely black here after scanning (CanoScan 9900F). I ask myself about the color-depth of modern digital camera's compared with film (slide and negative), maybe you know something more about this. You can see here the massive Nikolaitor (Nikolai Gate) built in 1170, still intact and used as gateway. I have corrected this image to get rid of the wide angle-effect by using the perspective transformation in Photoshop. Vertical lines are vertical again now. As you know I am fond of digital camera's. They have lots of advantages in comparison to the analogue ones. Maybe color depth is not one of them, maybe... I think a good digital SLR can outmatch lots of analogue ones.. especially when you have to scan your pictures to make it digital ones.. this gives loss of qualitly. I think you should by a digital SLR and I am sure all your needs will be satisfied.

great architecture foto, what you should do is scan at diffrent light settings so one scan will have the sky good and another the dark parts then combine them in a program like autopano http://www.autopano.net/key-features look at the hdr part. I think the colordepth of digital cameras isnt up to chemical film cameras but if you take multiple shots with diffrent aperature settings and combine them u'll get even better color or rather dynamic depth.

You may be able to use Photoshop to bring up some of the detail that's too dark. But this looks great 'as is'! Nice work on the perspective, it's perfect! Good shot, Jan-Carel!

Nothing wrong with this picture, Jan-Carel. The darkness brings out the age of this stout old castle.

Apart from the old building it is nice to see these old cars! The typical forms of Eastern European carmaking. Do I spot a yellow Lada near the old gate? Have a good day, J.C.!

Yes it is my perspective that you loose some detail when scanning, nice image of this old church, nicely presented:):)..V

Jan-Carel, as I am still working analog too, I'm also aware of those problems with scanning. The auto scanning calibration normally gives you a range from complete white to complete black. Before pushing the scan button, I usually compensate a bit by toning both black and white a little bit down in the correction levels. That way the blacks still show more levels (as well as the whites), so you should be able to adjust them in Photoshop with the 'Image / Adjustments / Shadows/Highlights...' function. It can make a big difference if you learn how to use it well... I love your shot of this magnificent building!
