Description


M17 in that Frenchman's list of 'Non-Comets'. Popularly called the Swan Nebula. I think you can see the shape of that aquatic feathered beast quite clearly, its head bent dow to the right of this picture. This is the brightest cloudy 'faint-fuzzy' other than the Orion Nebula. It is in Sagitarius, about 5000 light years away from us. It is red because of the host of baby stars (hidden by the nebula) inside that cause the cloud of hydrogen to glow. Some people call it the Lobster Nebula, the Omega Nebula or the Horseshoe Nebula. I guess it depends on what you are sniffing at the time.
