Description

This shot I dedicate to Rachel a.k.a. WiserAngel. I know she loves blue flowers and this spectral color is hardly better expressed by any other flower I know. This is the spring gentian (Gentiana verna), a common flower in the Alps. These flowers (here) are covered by pollens of grasses, hence the yellow dots. Walking around Beatenberg, a nice village in the Swiss Alps at about 1200 m (about 4,000 ft) I discovered these blue bloomers. Planning a vacation on short term is great, but when one needs to obtain a new camera it can get complicated. Almost all equipment was available except the stuff needed for macro-shots. After various efforts I gave up. Too bad, no macro, no flower close ups.... Until I thought of my uncle Jan, having a macro lens for his good old SLR-cam. After asking him he appeared to have a macro lens with the same diameter and here's the result, crisp and clear (ok, I detect some spherical aberration on the original, but downsized it's hard to notice that). Canon EOS 30D (ISO 100, f/11.0, 1/60 sec, 70 mm)

I know them so well. I have had them in my alpine garden many times, but since I don't have Alps in my garden I lost them all the time.. Very nice capture of this so well beloved flower.

You constantly amaze me with your ability to name flowers, both wild and garden. My mother-in-law has dozens of flowers in her beds, all fighting for survival. Most were not planted by her, but dropped off by birds etc. If she does not like the look of a plant, it is automatically designated as a weed,, and rooted out mercilessly. Regards, John.
