Description

General information. There are more than 110,000 described species of flies in the world. Flies are superb mimics, especially in the Families Bombyliidae (Bee flies), Syrphidae (Flower f lies) , and Asilidae (Robber f lies) . Bee flies are usually fast flying insects with appearances of small bees, while Robber Flies are commonly larger, slower flying, and a few resemble Bumble Bees. A fly known as the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly was designated as an endangered species in 1993 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This species has been found in sandy dunes and rolling terrain of two counties in southern California, and has been the subject of much controversy regarding the protection of some species of animals. Flies are found throughout the world, and exist in areas from the Arctic to the rain forests on the equator. I have no idea what it is doing. it looks like it has a housefly in the it's moth and I see four legs on one side http://www.si.edu/resource/faq/nmnh/buginfo/truefly.htm this is not the usual quality I try for but this Robber Fly was in an awkward place on a rose bush and I had blindly shoot the camera using auto focus. it also was dark and my Fuji will not flash in super macro. Cor, I had no idea that flies ate flies. This is an incredible shot and really very clear in spite of the problems. Thanks for all the data on the flies as it is useful information, and even at my age there is something to learn.

Holy smokes..........lol This is one hairy fly What a wonderful shot! I have never seen one of these up close. I wonder if this is what I got in my yard. I thought I had bumble bees but maybe not. I wonder what he is eating?

I loe the pose of your model and its eyes are creepy but amazing at the same time my friend :) Where it is standing or standing on seems to me it is a wild rose tree.. Am i right! I can tell from the little red line on the leaf on the left and i agrow them too.. :(( But this year is really crappy in Michigan.. Thank you for the post and happy fourth of July Too My Friend..
