Description

As I promised yesterday, here's a shot of the glacier calving. It's hard to convey the proper scale with a photo; just above and to the right of center, there's a more-or-less diamond shaped piece of ice. Its top edge is almost perfectly horizontal. See it? It's bigger than your house. Really. We all just kind of stood there in awe while the glacier did its thing for us. I was asked on the last post if that was the real color of the ice. Yes, that's the real color; I did a levels layer in PS, but no color tweaking at all. Especially on a cloudy day, the ice really is that color. Ice absorbs all colors except that beautiful blue, so that's the only color that gets back to our eyes. Also, the fresher the ice, the bluer it is; as the surface is exposed it absorbs air and starts to look whiter and whiter until it looks almost like snow. If you go back and look at yesterday's post, you'll see that there's a lot of fresh blue on the face of the glacier; it was very active that day. I consider myself very lucky to have been there for such a good show. Thanks for looking and any comments. Vacation's about over. We're back in Anchorage to fly home tomorrow, but I have lots and lots of photos to share. :-)

My most vivid memory of the glaciers was the blue color that you mention. I had never seen anything like it before, and did not know glaciers were that color. The color and the calving was such an incredible experience. Your pictures have captured it well.
