Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

Awesome shot mate!!! I'd be scared too lol :P Hey have you guys thrown stones into the lava.... If I was there I sure would lol... now I'm thinking what it'd look like when they are melting/burnig lol :P yeah I'm a typical kid :P thanks for shiaring this awesome stuff with us. Oh and yeah I see the stoned animal lol ;)

@short_ribs... Sure have Kai. Every time we visited this skylight, we threw lava rocks into the fluid lava. You won't see the rock melt but float swiftly away down the river of lava. The fluid lava is moving as fast as water would in a river. Thanks for asking

Most will never see this unless it is by photo. Excellent find and presentation.

His expression says it all, great shot, I think most people would be a little nervous standing so close:):):)

LMAO!!! Here we go again. You spotting faces in ordinary rocks. I love this photo....such subtle colors...and then BAAAAANG, theres that red/orange lava spicing things up a bit. Excellent portrait Errol. #:O)
TwoPynts
Yes, it reminds me of a tipped over horses head. The lava tube itself makes me think of a glowing, malevolent eye. He's a lucky boy to have a grandpa like you do this for him. I hope you guys had some good bonding time. Super shot, thanks for sharing.

This is a great shot my friend. But, your grandson sure doesn't look very happy. Guess I would be afraid too. What ever that stuff on the right is, looks like it is ready to jump out at him.....Aloha :)

redchilicat

Great picture of your grandson, and the fierce drooling animal beside him. He will one day cherish the photo you've taken of him by the boiling lava. HUGS!!

How amazing to be virtually standing on an active lava tube!!! About 6 weeks ago, Lori and I visited a dormant one at Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. You can walk thru the underground tube, like some prehistoric tunnel, for over a mile! It was fascinating to see, and to read about how it was formed. Thanks for showing us this "active" version. Like Kailen, it's a looks a little too hot and dangerous for me. :)
tizjezzme
Glad you mentioned the face .. I would have missed it. But you're right... :) Like a dragons eye is what I see. Anyway, I was first worried about Kailen, standing so close .. I can't blame him. Are you sure its safe to be there? (pardon me, I'm a born worry wart.. lol) EXCELLENT SHOT!
nongo
Boy oh boy I bet Kailen will treasure this photo, it's extremely cool, I mean HOT!!!!!!!! Amazing, I can't imagine what it would be like to be there in person!!!! He looks a bit worried too!!!!! Excellent work Errol!!!!! Aloha!! How close is he really standing to that red hot lava????? Just curious?? LOL!!!!
sharky_
@nongo... Akemi. At most, Kaile stands about 20 feet or less from the hole. He does feel the heat. Lucky the wind was blowing the heat away or we'd be cooked. @tizjezzme It is always a risk to walk thru the active lava fields. Several people had lost their lives. Aloha

So lucky your grandson... impressive ! You are right, it resembles an kimeric animal. Fantastic capture Errol !
Punaguy
There's a brave grandson there...but I'm sure he will remember this shot till his dying day! Good grandpa taking the grandson out for an adventure..! Aloha!
marybelgium
wonderful expression !
SNAKEY
That part of the rock does look like an animal and your grandson looks handsome.:O))
Digimon
Too cool!!

Your grandson will never forget that day and without the proof of the photo he would surely one day tell his own grandson that he had been dangled by his ankles over the skylight by his grandfather. You must know the place very well not to fall in. I fell in a peat bog once in Scotland. Not as hot but really difficult to get out of.
nomad_damon
very cool image, he looks rather wise. I would be frightened to stand there too.
MOODYBLUE92954
VERY INTRESTING GREAT CAPTURE
cherokee1961
I can certainly understand his fear! Handsome grandchild you have there!
