Well here goes...in for a penny, in for a pound! I for one come from the "Old school", yes that one on the left has my birth year! As an old D & D player, I was never one to collect copper! And I have a penny jar that is about 1 inch high with pennies, by the time I retire it should yield (In the year 2035) a whopping $25, by then enough to buy a hamburger, which I won't be able to eat because of high cholesterol and heart disease. What will the charities do though? Start collecting nickels I suspect! Abe will always be remembered more for the $5 anyway, and that big statue of him they made....though the one of Paul Bunyan is bigger! Great stuff Kort, and excellent macro shot!

Beautiful contrast between the two coins. In my opinion, I think they should try to find a new way to make the penny that doesn't cost as much. Trying to eliminate one cent just seems illogical to me, but I see the need to do something, that's for sure.

I heard or read somewhere recently that the Penny is the only US currency actually worth it's face value if not More.

Superb, clean, to the point (which perhaps few here will understand). The copper penny was a nice piece of work, though no modern coins can compete with ancient, especially ancient Greek coins. When the copper in it became worth more than the unit--well, same thing happened to the silver dollar. Those Eisenhower nickel alloy dollars, by the way, were made specifically to service the casinos in Las Vegas. At this point it doesn't much matter what is done with the units of U.S. currencywould you rather have your deckchair starboard or lee, hehe. RF gold rubles--hmmm.

I've had a brilliant idea, send them to me and let me deal with them....like, all of them! lol, Great argument though, its something I've not thought of. Why stop at pennies, just get rid of cash altogether. If you've ever been in Turkey you'll know what the cash there is like, it costs millions of Lira to buy a meal, a real pain carrying big wads of cash about, and counting it out? Ocht you've started me off now, but you wanted my 2c's worth!

I believe in the barter system ! in OZ we even have a "BarterCard"...cashless society, I never seem to have any in my wallet these days ! a very diverse concept. Cheers

A penny saved is a penny earned...I guess that will be a nickel saved is a nickel earned...lol..Maybe we could have a 2cent coin in place of a penny. With the price of gas, we may as well get rid of all the coins...

Perhaps a new coin made from glass filled composite or a high strength plasti-polymer might be a viable solution. I worry about the long-term economic impact of the cent is eliminated altogether. Pennies (and fractions thereof) add up quickly; ever see the movie 'Office Space'? :) Nice presentation and thoughtful commentary.

Now it costs more to mint the penny than it's worth...I say keep it...everyday I find pennies on the ground and I have made a jar just for such an ocassion..one by it'self isn't worth much, but a whole bunch makes it worth while to me.....Provacative image here Kort! Aloha!

Well I hate to see anything that I grew up with go. Remember penny candy ? The only thing that this will accomplish is less copper/zinc mining, which to my way of thinking is such a bad idea. Excellent image and thoughts.

All this over a penny or The Penny. Whatever happened to half-dollars as pocket change? IIRC they started becomeing 'rare' about 1967. Also, interesting tid bit, we are not alone regarding the half-dollar coin. I was surprised to find that Canada had such a coin! Probably the most attractive one as well. Oh well, that's my $.05 worth... price has gone up already! ;-D

I always leave the leftover pennies in the 'have a penny' dish whenever I buy something.But that's only because I don't want it.You can't believe how heavy coin becomes in your handbag/purse eventually!LOL.And I seriously doubt I'll become the next Rockerfeller by hanging on to loose pennies...BUT I never thought of the consequences of actually abolishing it,and the problems you mention are certainly food for thought.Thought-provoking upload,Kortalouche.My vote is to keep it and round-off as I do.-M :^)
