Description

"Many a person who started out to conquer the world in shining army has ended up just getting along. The horse got tired, the army rusty. The goal was removed and unsure." ~ Robert A. Cook

Some of you may remember that I took a trip to St. Mary's Georgia in early May. I stopped posting photos from that trip after getting such a wealth of material from my visit to Fairchild Gardens and the Chihuly glass exhibition there. I would like to get back to my St. Mary's trip soon, and here is a photo taken from a day excursion to Cumberland Island. The island was once home to the sprawling estates of the Carnegie family, but has since fallen into decay and the park service is working to restore the island to it's natural, unmolested state over the coming years. One of the many photo-ops during this day trip was the automobile graveyard. For some inexplicable reason, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources moved these classic cars out of a perfectly good barn and left them to rot. I had seen a previous photo of these cars after they had been exposed for the elements for about 10 years and were well on their way to ruin but still recognizable. I wasn't prepared to find how much further they had decayed and become for the most part unrecognizable lumps of rusty metal. A very sad thing, consider their history and how much they would have been worth if they had been preserved, but still a fortunate photo op. In fact, this photo nabbed me second place in July's myolympus.org photo contest, Cars division (P18). Please excuse the size of the image, I wanted to show off the fine rusty detail. Have a great weekend everyone! ----- Thank you for your verdant comments on my last upload, Leaf Space.

First off, congrats!!! Second, cool!! I love how all the cars have a similar palette, with regard to the color of the rust! And the leaves add to the overall effect. It is sad that the glorious vehicles end up like this, but it makes for an excellent shot!! Awesome thumbnail! Spooky!! At night the phantom lights glow!!!! I have to make a point to check your thumbnails, to make sure they're clean! ; )

Isnt it amazing that these cars are left to decay and rust. Looks alot like some places in New Mexico. lol. I think it should be our State motto or something. Rust and decay. This is a great image. I actually love old rusty trucks and cars. Here in Santa Fe, they use old rusted out trucks for sculptures and call it " found art ". I really do like them. I know ....I am weird. lol. Excellent shot !!!

Oh, I dunno. I think the automobile did a little too well at conquering the world, if world petroleum reserves are any indication. All that is will one day pass away... Excellent capture of the detail and textures on these old jalopies, and thought-provoking commentary, as usual!

Ooooh, love those rusted and pitted fenders! Oxidization at its best. Good capture. To maintain a beautiful and healthy environment they should compress all those cars into small blocks before they rust and deteriorate.
