Description

When Mt. St Helens erupted in 1980, Spirit Lake was filled with downed trees. I remember seeing it a few years later, and there was very little water visible. Gradually the trees are becoming waterlogged and sinking, and the lake looks more like a lake again. Except for snow-capped Mt Adams in the background, every hill in this photo was covered with trees, mostly giant Douglas Fir and Spruce. The eruption erased them in a few seconds. This area around the mountain has been left alone as a monument, but most of the downed trees have been replanted. In this photo I'm facing east, with St Helens just to my right a few miles away. More St Helens pics to come. Thanks for looking and any comments. I seem to be surviving my first week back at work; thanks for the kind wishes. :-)

Yes, we are nothing more than a speck, and this grandeur of this scene takes your breath away. How utterly blue is the lake. Glad you have got back into the swing Dennis. A hard thing to do after all you have seen.

Even now, all these years later, the terrain still has a surreal look. I wonder if those sunken logs will be a treasure 100 years from now, or buried by another eruption. Some logs on the bottom of the Great Lakes, waterlogged early last century, have been recovered by some ex Navy Seals and are worth a fortune. Interesting place, Dennis. And a terrific photo!

Ah! Great shot... funny, I don't think I got a shot of this. And I was a real fan of Harry Truman. I sure thought abuot him when I saw this. Your color is crisp and clear and a very impressive shot!

I know someone who was there recently, and she was telling me about the lanes of trees that were left standing because they were in the 'shadow' of an object that protected them! What a fascinating thought. This is lovely, and it does look so much better than a few of the pics I saved when it blew.
