Description

Not especially beautiful but very rare and secretive bird that is hard to photograph.. There are less than 50 pairs in the UK.. The Corncrake Crex crex - the only globally threatened bird to breed regularly in the United Kingdom - started to disappear from the English countryside more than a century ago, because of the introduction of more mechanized and intensive farming methods. Today in Britain, the species only breeds in north and west Scotland, where conservationists have been working intensively with local crofters and landowners to ensure the bird's continued survival. This bird of the Rail family prefers to nest in hay meadows and other grasslands, especially those with dense vegetation. Historical developments in farming practices, particularly the mechanized cutting of hay, destroyed many nests. Later, other changes in farming methods, such as the switch from hay to silage production, effectively forced the species' extinction in southern Britain as a regular breeding bird. Since the 1950s it has only bred irregularly in England. Certainly in order to capture them one needs to be able to follow the rather rasping call and be very lucky! Thanks for taking time to look, and any comments you care to make..

A lovely shot of this rare bird. Thanks for sharing the information about your images and this glimpse into your part of the world. She looks to be delicate and skittish, perhaps like a quail.

The colors indeed are a bit dull..but.. nevertheless the picture is beautiful. And because this bird has become so rare and nearly extincted the photograph has something special.

First, thank you for the many hours of effort it must have taken to get this photo. Funny, tho, when I opened it I was immediately struck by the fabulous detail and coloring of the feathers. So intricate! I find it quite beautiful, so I was surprised at your comment. But regardless, thanks again for showing this rail.

Oh tell me why...the female birds are so discrete in colors compared with the males. Among us humans "the birdies" are the most colorful. But...they don,t have to hide sitting on eggs :-) Anyway, a nice shot. She really look so kind and sweet.
