Description

This is the mouth of the Mighty Columbia River as it enters the Pacific Ocean. TheColumbia River Bar is rated the most dangerous crossing in the world...claiming over 2,000 brave souls earning the name..Graveyard of the Pacific. Annual river flow is 73 trillion cubic meters of water. 250.000 cubic feet per second flow into the Pacific Ocean. Over 300 ships pass Astoria, Oregon monthly. The bar is 600 yards wide, five miles long and 55 feet deep. The small green boats next to the ocean-going ships are pilot boats, not tugs. Astoria, Oregon is America's oldest settlement west of the Rocky Mountains Due to hazy summer days, I was not able to get a clear photo of the river and the Astoria Bridge. However, for those of you who have heard about this beautiful river, I hope that you will enjoy seeing it from Astor Hill, as much as I. Weekend is fast approaching, and I do hope that the past few weeks have been good ones for you. It is wonderful to be back in North Carolina again, and to admit that I have greatly missed the wonderful people of RR. Prayers to all.

Nice contrast between the clarity of the foreground and the haziness of the bridge and river, which actually looks like an ocean to me.

It's a lovely shot and haziness is part of the landscape. Crazy how the bridge looks out of kilter somehow. I sure wouldn't want to drive across it!

It looks layered the deeper it gets into the haze. Hope your trip was very memorable. Always nice to get home. Great pic.

Great shot. This and the other post give a good idea of how big the outlet of the Columbia really is. Was this taken by the monument on the hill? Believe I have some foggy images of that I'm now inspired to search for. Good to hear from you.... TW
