Description

"I am your number one fan. There is nothing to worry about. You are going to be just fine. I am your number one fan. " ~ Kathy Bates in MISERY (1990)

The Travellers Palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) is an interesting plant from Madagascar. It is not actually a fan palm but a member of the banana family, and is called the travellers palm because the stems hold rainwater that can be used as an emergency drinking supply. I can attest to this because when I prune the one growing in my garden, it releases a rush of fresh looking water. No, I have never tasted any...maybe someday. It is a good plant for warm areas, as a lawn or garden tree where it can spread. The enormous banana-like leaves are borne in a highly unusual fan shape, being aligned in a single plane. In Florida, they are a popular ornamental plant and when mature produce Bird Of Pardise like flowers. I really like the texture of this large one I found near the closed down bank from my "Empty Places, Empty Spaces" photo. ----- Thank you for your croaky comments on my last upload, Stacked!. I'm pleased to say that Chris is back online and posted a new froggie photo already.

Great macro again, Kort, this time of nature's wonderful design structure and method of alignment in the plant world. Also, nice textural color and lighting effects. As always, you've done it again!

"You read my palm", said the fan dancer, "and I'll divine your banana". Midnight at the oasis. Send your camel to bed....

For some reason the first thing came to my mind was Tiki. Its as if it was holding its belly and closing his eyes. Very interesting capture of this plant. Aloha

Leafy composition Kort, we have these in OZ as well, they all seem to grow North, South, so the leaves face the morning and afternoon sun light. Your very brave to prune these suckers, with all those spikey bits ! just love the textures Cheers

Beautiful presentation!!!!! I wonder if this is like the one I saw on Maui? I thought they called it the sailors palm because it faces north & south, and that way when lost could find their way back to the boat!!! LOL!!!!!! very cool!!!!

Excellent shot. I tried to photograph a palm tree here but it turned out very boring, not like your idea. The spikey bits on the palm tree here can put a person in hospital if they get pricked. If you have to prune them so they don't bring down overhead cables/telephone wires then you have to drive them to a special dump.
