After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't always mean security
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman, not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow's ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down
in mid-flight
after a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers
and you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn...

I long ago learned not to share my intimate memories with my current lover - for the very reason you outline here. Sharing memories of other loves, like confessions of infidelties, are almost always selfish and cruel, even if the loved-one demands 'the whole honest truth'. Our own memories are to be treasured, though in my old age I've learned to jettison a few - though I can never be sure whether they'll return to haunt me when I least want or expect. This was a thoughtful - and thought-provoking piece - and very well written. Thanks for sharing. Mike

Very well said, fellow passenger...

Well expressed! HUGS! Worst thing one can do is to place memories in a closet, boxed or otherwise. Like life itself, they too live! Best thing I know is to make sure that we have more pleasent memories than unpleasent ones. And more important, is to ensure that we are making more pleasent memories than unpleasent ones. And even more important than that, is to be so consumed in pleasent moments, there is no time for memories at all! ;)

Excellent work, young lady!! I agree with all the above comments. I'm also reminded of the recent, Keith Urban song, "Making Memories Of Us". Methinks its time for you to make your own, new, good ones. My best, kind soul. T.P.
