~ Animals ~
We patronize them for their incompleteness,
for their tragic fate of having taken
form so far below ourselves.
And therein we err, and
err greatly. For the animal
shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete
than ours they move finished and complete,
gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost
or never attained, living by voices
we shall never hear.
They are not brethren,
they are not underlings;
they are other nations, caught with ourselves
in the net of life and time,
fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of earth.

My MOST favorite of poems! "...they are other nations, caught with ourselves" is so profound! It took me too long to realize what that meant, but I do now. When we die, all our assets go to the ASPCA. Love this dedication!!! Wonderful image and deeply profound words!! ~ Big hug! ~

Mina, thank you so much for the wonderful dedication, poem, and evocative image. I'm beyond words. And that Whitman poem is one I hadn't read before. It's wonderful: "... they do not make me sick discussing their duty to God ..." "... not one is demented with the mania of owning things ..." Thanks again for all this. For me, real maturity will come with the realization of the interconnectedness of all things. But the manner in which most of humanity disregards the natural world and animals only indicates how far we have to go. This post provides hope. Big hug! Gene
