Description

To the untutored ear it might just sound like a load of quacking, but British researchers have discovered that the country's ducks, much like its people, have distinct regional accents. Ducks from London make a rougher sound which resembles shouting so that fellow birds can hear them above the hubbub of city life, whereas their country cousins make a softer sound, the study found. The differences were uncovered after academics at London's Middlesex University recorded the calls of ducks at a city farm in the capital and at a tranquil location in Cornwall, southwest England, the Guardian newspaper said. There was a clear difference in sound, English language lecturer Victoria de Rijke told the paper, with the London ducks "much louder and (more) vocally excitable". "The Cornish ducks made longer and more relaxed sounds, much more chilled out. The cockney [London] quack is like a shout and a laugh, whereas the Cornish ducks sound more like they are giggling," she said. Had to laugh at this one seems life in the country is quieter for more than one reason!!

Incredible this difference between the sounds they made ! As if there was an adaptation to an environment or another. Anyway, this little Duck is so lovely with a very nice red color. His eye is very impressive, very serious ;o)))). Another portrait rich in details and a superb quality Danny. Have a nice evening. Hugs.

Excellent! LOL! Derby ducks wear large, hoopy earings, a fat-roll around the waist, and are generally followed by a troupe of aggressive-looking ducklings of various shades & ages. All can be frequently hear issuing the call "am ah bovvered?"

A quiet duck is the best kind of duck if ya ask me. We have some muscogees in the lake behind my house and they can cause quite a racket! Very interesting info and a great capture.

Yes I usually give details but that story took over The old name for this species was White-eyed Pochard but it was rightly considered that the reddish colouring of the bird's plumage was a more distinctive feature than the colour of its eyes

I read about the shouting ducks somewhere - no wonder really, if you have to shout to be heard you're pretty much out of options... Beautiful crisp and detailed as usual.
