Description
Storms have always fascinated me...so, when a storm front approached a few nights ago I just had to take a "crack" at getting some lightning shots. In total, I managed to get 57 shots in before the bolts got a little too close, the wind picked up and the rain began to pelt down. Of those 57, only 24 had any lightning visible in the frame. Of those 24, only 13 had visible bolts, the rest were "sheet" lightning. Of those 13 bolts, only 2 or 3 may be gallery worthy...this is one of those.
Some non-technical tips for those wishing to give this a try;
1)Set up your cam/tripod and cam settings indoors...remember,it's dark outside!
2)When you do go out to set up, take a flashlight...remember,it's dark outside!
3)Ensure you stay close to some suitable shelter...I was 100m from the house so it made for an interesting run in the rain and darkness with cam/tripod/flashlight in hand.
4)Do NOT use a tree as suitable shelter!!!!
5)If you feel your hair standing on end....that means that lightning may soon take a "shine" to you......RUN like hell!
All joking aside, storms are very dangerous...Please be very very careful when outdoors taking storm shots.

What a fantastic shot. I don't think I'd ever try this with my camera...too slow.

Now THIS is the kind of lightning I wanted to capture. I managed to do the same as you. Take mucho plenty shots. And hope for the best. I applaud you for your courage. And YES, it is DARK outside. I was smart enough to do like you and set up indoors. Great work. Aloha

Awesome capture!

Great work!! I've tried this before, I know how hard it is. I left the shutter open and would advance to the next one after a strike and hope I got something. For me the hardest was to focus (its dark outside!), most of mine where blurry. I failed tip 4, but a can add a tip: try this when the spose isnt around, for if THEY knew you where trying this, it would be worse than the lightening! LOL! Great stuff! :-D

I believe this is the same one that hit us a few nights prior - constant bolts; one after another. Yes, safety is a must - some survive - some don't; take no chances. Excellent capture John. You patience has paid off.

This is brilliant. I tried to capture a lightningstorm this summer....and i just ended up with 1 decent shot and 30 mosquito bites. Soooo not worth it. #:o/ I can tell that your shot though, would have been worth just as many mosquito-bites if not even more. Excellent job as always. #:o)
