Description

Back in the fifties and sixties, millions of families eagerly followed the early days of space exploration in amazement as they remained glued to their radios and TV's, awaiting the tiniest of news snippets to arrive from space. Those days appear to be gone, as the only news today seems to be about crime, terrorism, war and dirty politics. With this image, I wanted to capture that spirit of wonder and adventure of space exploration that touched so many so long ago. I also want to honor all the visionaries and brave astronauts that dedicated their lives to the peaceful exploration of the final frontier.

Reminds me of the old youth stories by RAH. Good work

Nice work - great sense of scale. Unfortunately, though there has been significant scientific benefit from space exploration, there has been little obvious impact on the average person - no space colonies, no vacations in space (except for multi-millionaires), no skies filled with space transports. So the romance & adventure of space travel is still pretty much confined to sci-fi...

Some still look skyward and know it's our future. All our eggs are in one basket here. Our future may depend on putting more than just a few good people into space. Magnificent render. ^_^

I bet if NASA had somethign this big (I could be wrong, but aren't the current shuttles and rockets smaller than this), it might draw some more people out. The prospect of an outpost on the moon and a possible trip to Mars in coming years could rekindle people's interest in the skies above and beyond us. Are there any kids in the crowd, up past thei bedtimes, sitting on their parents' shoulders?

Well done ! Excellent render. I would have to disagree with eyeland,.......there have been many benefits from space exploration, from the mundane, like Tang, Nomex(flame retardant fabric) and Velcro(all developed for the space program)to communications satellites, agricultural sats, GPS and so on. They're just not the sexy stuff we thought we would have by now(Like flying cars, I want my flying car !).

An absolutely amazing image, and a sentiment I share. The politics of the fifties and sixties were no less dirty and vitriolic than todays' (McCarthy or Nixon, anyone?), it just seems we can no longer rise above them. Very sad, but your image is inspiring.

Yes, the politics were also dirty 45 yrs ago, however, today there seems to be nothing else but bad news. There's nothing positive to grab on to, nothing good to look forward to, and no excitement for a bright future.

It's nice to see a beacon of hope once in a while for space exploration. Hopefully something will spark again with my generation, though from what I've seen aroud my school that thought is almost laughable.

Great sense of scale and great crowd. I also disagree with eyeland, "outlast" a thermal product found in winter garments, gloves, etc..was a NASA product for space suits.

A little dark on my monitor but it looks awesome anyway!

On my internet monitor it also looks too dark, but that's only because I have this monitor set to darker due to eye strain. I've seen people run their monitors either too bright or too dark, which makes it impossible to please everyone, so I just set all my images to my reference grayscale calibration on my studio monitor. There's an easy way to do that on any monitor... just look at a simple grayscale bar chart that goes from black to white in small steps, and adjust your brightness so all the grays are visible.

Amazing image and sense of scale. I watched a shuttle launch once - we weren't allowed to get that close though. Something to do with the heat i think...
