Description

The susorrus, sibilance of corduroys, rasping its song as we talk. The satisfying crackle of new fallen leaves, crunched underfoot as we walk. The snap and the pop from the fire-pit, secure in it's circle of stones, The rippling laugh of a tiny brook adds its dulcet tones. These sounds of the last days of Autumn, create a nectar so fine, We snuggle there on a quilt in the meadow, and drink it all in, this rare wine. There are colours here too on the table, the main dish of our Autumnal feast. The leaves are ablaze in their glory, a bonfire of visual heat. Primary colours the herbs here, oranges, yellows and reds, From the leaves beneath our feet, to the treetops over our heads. They blend exotically into each other, creating tantalizing tastes. Until finally after a gluttonous feed, the hunger of our minds eye it sates. The smells are the condiments out here, adding richness to a savory stew. They certainly enhance the flavor, so we sample a dash or two. The sweet sticky tang of an apple, as juice explodes down our chins. The sharpness and crispness of aromas, here where the atmosphere thins. The primordial musk of a bruised leaf, crushed beneath dancing feet. Until finally senses all sated, we fall back insensate; replete. We doze there snug on our blanket, in sensory overload. We'll dream of this feast for the senses as we drift somnolent in the cold. The sunset is cleared from the table, and moonrise becomes our dessert. So stuffed are we that our senses, border on exquisite hurt. Then our picnic of Autumnal beauty , draws quietly to a close. We'll snack on it's memories forever, this wondrous repast for our souls.

Halfway up a mountain in Germany in an October long past. I don't remember the actual menu, but these things are as fresh as if frozen in time.

Very nicely written/painted--i agree totally about frozen in time... i & my bestest friend i the world(God enjoy him till we meet again) spent 28 days one Oct. in the Olympic Rain forest. The Hoh, Queets, & Qunault rivers run to the sea from MT. Rainier- rainy-er than any place ive been but so rich with SLUGS-foot long yellow & 15inches of rain 2nites & a day-almost got washed & was so close to the Blue glacier--but wasnt to be-i have a slideshow im very proud of--we were smoked saus aged us...only sorta dry wood is under the moss that grows on every limb of every thing. One to 1-11/2 ft. schoolbus yellow oak leaves with burnt red, green, brown spots accent their scalloped magnificance... While gigantic Henry Moore style wooden sculptures lay strewn on a course black sand are ground by a frightening-foaming & majestic coastline. Cedar i guess would glow from within as the sea swollen wood irradessed as day turned to moonlit magic! Go see it -its too close to miss-then go back to Death Valley a few imes to ballance your water levels. Zion-Grandaddy Canyon-i & 4 others went 13 days in Dorys-1974-cost 500 dollars-& was alot then-Martin Litton Dories. sorry i got carried away-IT IS SO VIVID!!

But can either one of us remember what we did last Tuesday? In these days when each generation has it's own horrific flashbulb snapshot of insanity, it's heartening to know we also have these, memory boxes of saved treasures,so crisp and clear that, simply by closing our eyes we are instantly transported. Glad to have provided the ticket. Thanks for reading and the comment, BJ

I agree somedays are but a faint memeory yet we remember the whisper of Nature's voice. Your verse does indeed capture the essence of Autumn well which in turn paints the picture inside my head clearly. Beautifully done!!!...:))

Sumptuous and delicious imagery so carefully blended into your own inimitable 'feast for the senses' - and for the heart. An intimate picnic amongst the matchless beauties of autumn ... sounds just the thing to me! Lovely poem. Mike
