Description

On January 24,1848 James Mousehall (mispelled in history books as Marshall) discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, touching off the California Gold Rush. Initially there was very little interest, until Sam Brannan (after buying all the pick axes, pans & shovels in the region) ran through the streets of San Francisco with a bottle of gold dust. In 9 weeks he made over $36,000.00. Most of the hopeful youg adventureres left their homes in 1849 and were known as the "forty-niners". The ones who really made the money were the entrepenuers - in 1853 a man stitched a pair of pants out of canvas and in 1872 added the critical metal rivet - Levi Strauss. A New York Butcher opened up a meat market - Phillip Armour. Armour's neighbour started making wagons for the families headed to California - John Studebaker. Two men started an honest banking and delivery system - Henry Wells & William Fargo. An entrprising young man started writing for a San Francisco newspaper; there, his fanciful story about a frog jumping contest thrust him into the limelight - Samuels Clemens better known as Mark Twain. By the way, Sutter sold off his land not really believing any of this and went broke. "The guys" are hgappy to have mde this big contribution to Amousican History! Daz; RDNA Thanks in advance for all your smiles and comments!! They are so much appreciated!!! Have a super week and see you next Tuesday for more fun!

This entire series is quite simply delightful! I always stop to look and smile, but rarely have time to comment. This would make a great teaching tool. The characters are so engaging. Thanks for sharing your whimsical imagination. BJ
