Description

On April 22, 1889, people who gathered on the Arkansas and Texas borders of Oklahoma could seek a parcel of unclaimed land and file for ownership with the federal government. Buglers were stationed around the perimeters of the region and they announced the opening of the new land at noon. People burst westward in droves on foot, in covered wagons and on horseback. The riders on horseback charged ahead of the droves of land seekers, but as they spread across the horizon they were discouraged to see that many covered wagons and even men on foot had already occupied many prime places. As many as nine out of ten of these settlers had jumped the gun, earning themselves the name of "Sooners". Those who entered the land legally would later challenge those "sooner" claims in court but the federal government would claim that all squatters had been chased out before noon. "The guys", of course, found all the best places! Daz Thanks in advance for all your comments and smiles!!! Have a great week and "the guys" will do a little Halloween scene for you next Tuesday!!

The sky and the dust are so realistic, it makes a fun contrast with the mice--somehow you have captured the moment, even with cartoon critters!

The 'Guys' are always cute, but your horse crack me up every time I see them. As always, interesting lesson in history here. I didn't realize that's why they were call 'Sooners'.
