My recent two uploads pay homage to big historical events locally. I hope I do justice to the memory of people honoured, while wishing our next generations will not make the same mistakes. This is one of the memorials for fallen Brittish soldiers during the Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1902. I spare a thought for their loved ones.

An extract of the names found here from the county where Di (rainbows) was born:

2nd BN Royal Lancaster Regt
LCpl Knowles, J
Pte Craft, CW
Pte Duval, JR
Pte Maloney, C

A significant number of the Boer casualties rest in these hills in unmarked graves...

wonderful memorial and capture. too bad they have time and money for dedications to the fallen but not for to prevent war to begin with. it is only a dream for there not to be war, but it is a nice thought

I'm really glad you posted this. I think it's really important to remember the price others paid, so that we can live the way we do. Thanks for the upload!

Maybe war would stop being attractive if they stop presenting it as some kind of heroic adventure with fallen heroes and other rubbish like that... I'm sure many veterans feel the same way... My heroes are old mothers and fathers, but no memorials for them. Nevertheless these places make you think and wonder...

Oom Piet, an incredibly moving image and dedication to all of those who lost their lives. It is deeply sad that wars continue. I thank you for standing on this spot and rememebering not only the fallen but the Mothers, the wives the brothers of all the dead. Boer and British alike. Had I have been closer I would have stood full square by your right shoulder, listening to the voices of the silent. Oom, you have approached this sensitive subject with great dignity and humility. I am glad you could be there... On a personal note, My dear Uncle Alex was in the Lancashire Fusiliers many years after the Boer war. My Papa was in The Royal Navy. My family are no strangers to the forces, we know only to well the hardships of separation. Good Night, Oom Piet. God Bless. Di & David.

Another captivating image reflecting on the past! I do prefer focussing on the future, though, but thanks for the reminder again, Oom!! 8;o)

A poignant capture and tribute to the gallant warriors of the Anglo-Boer War. Another piece of South Africana to ponder. That said, the photo could use some brightening, Piet. Fine shot, otherwise.

How very nice of you for this memorial to those fallen. In giving the names of the men from Di's area you really brought this home. Rarely do we learn the names of those who have given their lives in far away countries and so many years past. Wonderful!! HUGS!!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Just this evening we all posed for a photo to send to my nephew in Iraq. We hope he comes back to us safely in time for his wedding... so we won't be posting his name. :0)

The soldiers should be remembered and honored for their bravery and sacrifice. The folly of politicians should also be remembered and avoided. So much tragedy over gold and empire!
