As we learned of the Demonologist, her danger comes in the demons she summons and binds to her control. But rarely are they well controlled, and a demon has its own self interest always foremost in its mind. As our studies move across the lower planes to the infernal pits of Hell, all that changes.

The Diabolist is a mage, like the Demonologist, who consorts with lower planar creatures. But her talents lie in the skillful manipulation of the law, for that is the bread and butter of Hell. Diabolist, like the devils they summon and strike bargains with, are absolutely bound by the tenets of law, mostly divine law, but occasionally man's law as well. They do not have to overcome their lower planar hosts with force of will and threats of force. They make binding legal contracts with them. And as the devils of Hell are bound by the absolute adherence to law, such bargains, if done correctly, are all that a Diabolist needs to secure their aid, guardianship, or service. Not surprisingly, most Diabolists hide amongst polite society, and are usually well thought of and highly placed. Most of them are nobles or well-to-do merchant class individuals. And more than a few are actually probationers in their daily lives, lawyers.

Now, you might ask, why would I worry about these Diabolists? Aren't they just a Demonologist with a twist? To an extent, yes. The important difference between a Diabolist and a Demonologist is their philosophy and mind-set. Because they are ruled by law, because they are disciplined and focused as a matter of necessity, they are organized. They have a goal, a vision, and they are working towards it always, with foresight and contingencies for every possible outcome. Where a Demonologist goes from one heinous crime to the next, doing whatever gives her pleasure and a thrill for the moment, the Diabolist won't wipe her ass without a plan. Their origination is both their strength and their weakness. Discover their plan and you can defeat their purpose, if only for a while. But realize the single minded nature of these individuals often time places them in direct service of eternal forces, and their plan becomes a part of the grander scheme of Hell, the complete and absolute overthrow of Heaven with a new God placed on the High Throne, one not so forgiving as the Gods we now worship.
