Description

This is following on from Kai's thread in the forum regarding HDR images. I wasn't going to post this in my gallery but the file size is to big for the forum and to reduce it anymore would negate the effect of doing the HDR. I was looking for a contrasty scene that would be impossible to capture with other methods. I choose this because it is local, and quite handy to work with undisturbed while I get the exposure and set the camera. It is taken in natural light ie I did not switch on the churches interior lights. The sun is coming in through the window to the right and lighting the flowers on the left. Taken by conventional means the shot could not have captured details in the stained glass windows, or in the patch of sunlight, without making the wall paintings disappear into darkness. The image was made from 6 originals shot in RAW from underexposed to overexposed and combined together in PS /HDR merge. Well there yer go - for the history peeps the church dates to around 1130AD and what you are seeing is the original part of the church with its Norman wall paintings. The stained glass windows date from the 14th and 15thC. It quite interests me that they had the signs of the zodiac painted around the arch not something that is common in modern churches. The arches are made of Roman brick probably salvaged from a nearby villa. Hence they are not the typical rather crude arches of most Norman builders. There is a large version Many thanks for viewing and any comments, Richard.

Well well well...leave it to Richard to show the perfect usage of HDR. Like i told you before...i too find very little use for this specific tecnique in general...but for shots like this...WOW! If only i had thought of this when i went to the Vatican. I bet i then could have gotten some decent shot out of my visit to the St Peters church....sigh. I tried to make a HDR-image out of the photo im about to post in a little while...but wind-movement made it impossible. Bla bla bla...superb example my dear friend. Have yourself a wonderful evening! #:o)

I'm not sure what HDR means but out of the description it seems like its effective especially considering it was several images taken over and underexposed and then stitched!! AWESOME job! Well done! 8;o)

Excellent sample, it brought out the high light without losing the detail. Exciting to learn about these new things.

xlt example of where HDR work can really bring out the best bits of an image...and then put them all back together to produce something that would not normally be possible!!! Congrats!

the effect is stunning Richard. from my recent work in dark cathedrals I understand the advantage. I will try some raw myself in the next few days and see what result I can muster. this church reminds me of a cathedral I visited in the Filipines

Wow...this is so neat. Wowwww! Woowow! Actually Richard, I just got back from the "comments" thread..so you get a Wow! I have also tried some HDR images but not with such a fine place to try it. Your work here is well done and very pleasing. I would dearly love to see how a simple one shot exposure would show this church, for comparison. You seem to have captured the detail in both highlight and assumed shadow area well. And, yes, this is a lovely shot. Tom.
