Description

There is a larger version to view by clicking on the image. Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge this castle has no other purpose than to impress those who take things at face value. It is indefensible as a castle being built on sloping ground with the moat raised on the lower side. To drain the moat one would only have had to dig away the bank and the water would be gone. It did impress his friends who could come down for hunting trips in the local woods and countryside however. It has never seen battle being built well away from the coast in Sussex Downland. Many thanks for viewing and comments, Richard.

Well, I guess sometimes appearances ARE everything. It obviously didn't need to be defensible. But it is a very picturesqe structure in a lovely setting. Gorgeous photo.

Very Good, When I first saw it I thought it was Leeds castle. I have not been to this one I think I will have to make a trip. Impressive that it has never seen battle, most of the castles I photograph are well bashed.
