Description
OK, having spent most of my astrophotography time looking at Mssr Messiers list of things not to look at if you are hunting comets, I went out and actually hunted for a comet.
This is Comet C/2006 M4 or SWAN. It has been discovered this year by the SOHO telescope team and has rounded the sun and is on its way out of the Solar system (for good). The sun has altered its orbit to an hyperbolic one, so it will now go out into the void never to be seen on earth ever again.
It is at the moment in Hercules and you can see it with binoculars if you know where to look.
It is NOT going to hit the earth so please make sure you vote and get your flu shots.

It always amazes me how little people in general know about the night sky.... ok, I'll stop whining now! Nice shot: what kind of scope are you using ?

"It is NOT going to hit the earth so please make sure you vote and get your flu shots." Ever the comic relief, eh? Well, I've been wanting to see this comet so I'm glad you obliged. Never again to be seen from Earth? That is a shame...it has a nice greenish glow to it. Can you find me a black hole next? =o]

Nice; I was wondering if you would get a shot at Swan. Up here in the NW, we're coming off of 10" of rain the last few days (we got a little water problem now), so I have not had the skies to look yet.

How do we know that some other sun won't affect it and change it's trajectory again? I did vote and never get flu shots! I thought it was going to be a constellation of a swan. That will teach me to read titles a little more carefully! What a cool colour! Did you do that? Thanks. BJ
