Description

Hello again and many thanks for looking and commenting! After I uploaded my previous pic I started to wonder why didn't I choose the topic from my countrys history? So I made another battle scene using those same colors(I just love deep blue). Soldiers are from pics, everything else Bryce. Many thanks to Renderosity free stuff! This is dedicated to Winter War veterans and all grandfathers and grandmothers who have fought for the independence of Finland, my beloved homeland. """One of the most famous early battles of the Winter War occurred at Suomussalmi during December, 1939. The Russian 44th Division advanced along the Raate Road from the south and the 163rd Russian Division advanced from Juntusranta from the North. They were supposed to link up at Suomussalmi and then head West across Finland to Oulu and cut the country in half. Russian troop strength totaled 48,000 men, 335 cannon, 100 tanks and 50 armored cars. The Finnish defenders reinforced from a few thousand now numbered 17,000 with 11 cannons under the command of Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo; his only hope was to defeat the Russians in detail. And he did. To slow down the 163rd in the north, Finnish ski troops made wide circling flanking movements of 20 to 30 miles under cover of the long night and caught the rear and middle parts of the column by surprise. They found Soviet soldiers huddled around fires in -40

Thanks for your comments! It's truly a great piece of history behind this and as a Finn I'm very proud of it:) As you look those numbers it's indeed like a miracle happened but from times and deeds like that we drew our "Sisu" which means like your inner strenght, guts. By the way this battle is used as an example in the high military academys even in USA today.

Looking at such beauty and peace, form the first image and to know what really happened during that time is such a contrast. Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure of Finland, but here the blue is perfect for a snowstorm on a moonlit night. BJ

Very nice work, I really like the subtle reference to the Napoleonic war using period cannonId like to see you explore that aspect a bit more, if thats not too clich Ive always enjoyed the aspect of history repeating its selfhumanity never seems to learn.

Wow! An impressive and fitting tribute to a hard-fought battle in extreme conditions. You've captured the sense of cold and darkness very well - also, the sky is very impressive!!

I really like this piece of work, the deep blue does give it that touch of glass. It is a very well presented and professional design, keep up the great work.
