Rustic Lantern by TwoPynts

"Ten thousand flowers in spring the moon in autumn, a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter. If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things, this is the best season of your life." ~ Wu-men
Ishi-Doro Lanterns were originally introduced into Japan from China. The first ones were made of metal and primarily used to light doorways to temples and shrines. They were later made of stone for use in gardens, but it wasn't until they were introduced into Japanese tea gardens by tea-master Sen-no-Rikkyu that they really become a major garden element. Japanese tea ceremonies were often held in the evenings and light was needed to guide guests to the tea room. Aside from that though, the stone lanterns were primarily a decorative element and rarely used as a light source. Rustic Japanese lanterns are made to look rough hewn to blend easily into natural landscapes and hillsides. Originally, suitable shaped stones were piled on top of each other to form a lantern shape. Today the granite is rustically carved to precise sizes to give the rustic appearance yet balanced proportions. The example above appears to be a traditionally constructed version. -----
Thank you for your crimson comments on my last upload, Oribe ~ Ishi-Doro And for those of you that commented on the water, it is indeed caused by the tanins from leaves and pine needles, not by some genocidal goldfish bloodbath. Nice shot of the Ishi-Doro and the flora among the sharply contrasting light and shadow....sundial material here. Pretty good balancing act with the lantern, also.
