Description

"To a mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders." ~ Chuang-tzu

Here we have a simplified Sangatsu-Do style stone lantern that is large an impressive yet blends well with the natural setting. It is a classic ancient "tachi-gata" or pedestal type lantern and is used at Japanese Buddhist temples -- identifiable from its lotus blossom style roof. Named after Sangatsu-do Hall in Nara, Japan. Ishi-Doro Lanterns were originally introduced into Japan from China. The first ones were made of metal and primarily used to light doorways to temples and shrines. They were later made of stone for use in gardens, but it wasn't until they were introduced into Japanese tea gardens by tea-master Sen-no-Rikkyu that they really become a major garden element. Japanese tea ceremonies were often held in the evenings and light was needed to guide guests to the tea room. Aside from that though, the stone lanterns were primarily a decorative element and rarely used as a light source. -----

I must say it blends in well with a natural environment. It would not surprise me if that was also part of the design. Very well photographed.
