Description

From the worlds of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, the spaceship Discovery in orbit about Jupiter's moon Io, with the mysterious monolith (TMA-2) in the distance. Kettle drums please HAL ... The project was created using Celestia, Bryce, Studio and Photoshop. The background scene of Io and Jupiter was composed in Celestia, and is astronomically accurate. The rendering of Discovery and TMA-2 was pretty straight forward, but there was a *lot* of postwork in Photoshop. Models are 3DS distributed as add ons for Celestia, which is a superb, free, open source astronomy program: see http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ Various images are derived from the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Jupiter and Io appear as themselves. Thanks for stopping by. Suggestions and criticisms are always most welcome.

A very creative composition...that's for sure !!! I love the way that the spaceship seems to connect with the planets forming kind of a geometric form... Excellent work !!!

Well done! This is a very clever project. I like the way the different, spherical images are handled without becoming monotonous.

look's great, only thing is the Discovery is upside down. Thanks. The orientation was quite deliberate. If you'll remember, Discovery's artificial gravity came from the internal spinning drum, and the ship would slowly spin relative to the sun to evenly distribute heat. So 'up' becomes very relative. :)
