The one in the back is a pansy. grin I saw tulips like that in the Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands www.keukenhof.nl but I don't know what type they are. There are some similar ones that can be found here http://brecks.com/search.asp?t=c&c=7&pc=&showall=1 (I have no connection to that site, except that I remembered the name from the catalogs my grandma used to order from).

Thanks a jillion, kierab! I can always rest assured there is someone out there who will come to my aid on the subject of flowers, plants and trees. This helps immensely because there are other flowers at Descanso Gardens that resemble the above and now I'm sure they're tulips.

These are a breed of tulip. Its one of the fancy ones. Or at least that's what it looks like. I get a Dutch Bulb catalog and this is what they look like anyway. I can't really see the leaves tho so it could be another type of tuber, bulb or rizome. :-) Beautiful photo.

Gorgeous tulips! One of the things I miss most about living in this part of Florida is that you can't grow these types of spring flowering bulbs.
