Excerpts From The Journal Of Delina Uth Katan: Year of the Red Moon
Day 132
They are at it again. I have seen them before on my daily walks. Every few cycles, a new one comes from some distant land to fight the old Male Dragon, to challenge him for dominance and the right to mate with the Queen of the Dragons; Argonnas. Twice She has taken a newcomer as Her Mate since I became Her Watcher. Twice, and yet no young have emerged from Argonnas' lair. Maybe, should fortune shine on the Queen, this time will be different! This male is the youngest by several seasons to challenge the old Male, and looks like he may be the one most worthy to get the chance to mate with the mighty Wyrm. I will have to keep my eyes skyward over the next moon cycle to see what befalls.
Day 133
She flies today! That means there has been a victor in the struggle and She goes to see if he is worthy. I wonder if it was the young Male I saw? Could this be the season I bare witness of the next Queen or King of the Dragons?
I must be away soon to Her lair to observe more closely and find out if She has taken this younger male as Her new mate, or if his carcass is among the Ruins of Sorath below Her, and She goes to congratulate the older Male. I truly hope it is not so, for Her time grows short, and the older Male has had His chance.
Even for a Dragon, She is getting on in years. How many more seasons can She hope for, before She can no longer produce? Yes, I must go to see. I have to know.
Day 136
As I watched them circle above, my heart soared along with them. It was the younger Male I saw with Queen Argonnas!
For three days I have watched them soar into the heavens and meet, only to come together locked in the embrace not of death, but of joyous life! She has mated successfully! My heart leapt with joy at the site.
This will be the year, I know it! Finally, after so long, I might be witness to one of the rarest sights afforded my people.
The birth of a Dragon does not happen often, and to bare witness to the possible birth of the next Queen or King is a special gift indeed.
All the sacrifices, trials, and heartaches I have endured to become Her Watcher seem so trivial, when I look now upon the site of them celebrating their union.
