Description

The Rear Naked Choke, or RNC, is probably the most simplistic of any submission you are likely to see. While behind your opponent, you slip your arm up and over their shoulder bringing the crook of your elbow up and under their chin. Using the same arm you reach over and grab the opposite arm by the bicep while applying a squeezing pressure with the "triangle" created by both arms. This has a two fold effect in that it chokes off blood flow to the brain from both the left and right carotid arteries if applied correctly as well as pressure to the front of the throat that restricts air flow and potentially can crush the larynx. The legs around the waist of the opponent are used for leverage as well as causing the opponent to bare the weight of both combatants thus wearing them out quicker. In this position, the person performing the RNC is also able to arc their back throwing their opponent off balance taking them backward toward the floor were it is more difficult to maneuver to escape the choke. In Mixed Martial Arts, whenever you see this choke applied from a standing position, it will end up going to the mat 95% of the time and from there to victory. The RNC in the image provided is much looser in it's "triangle" than would normally be seen from the maneuver to better illustrate the initial positioning

I have been involved in mixed martial arts since 1982. These are some of the best illustrations I've seen. You ought to consider doing a book. Excellent renders!!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your comments. I had hoped that my growing love and appreciation of the subject would show through in my images. Stukes, I appreciate your comment and idea. As someone that participates in the sport, and most likely is rather familiar with these very maneuvers, your comment is greatly appreciated. I still have a some more in this series to create such as a classic armbar, Tai clinch/knee combo and a couple of others. I have given some thought to possibly animating these techniques next although that is something that would be new for me. Either way, I am having a great time creating these and I hope I will continue to do them some justice.

Looks great! I'm not much a fan of MMA, but I do see the rear naked choke occasionally in professional wrestling (yes, I do watch), although it's used more as a rest hold or a submission hold at the end (going home) than anything else. It's not quite the same as the "real" thing, but it's still effective.
